Welcome to the HARBOR Area Recreation, Trails & Open Space home page. For more than a year now, HARBOR, Inc. has been working on a Recreation & Open Space Initiative to determine gaps and threats to high quality recreation and open space in the Greater Harbor Springs area. Beginning in May 2005, HARBOR, Inc. began working specifically on Recreation through the Partnerships For Change program. In February 2006, HARBOR, Inc. began working on Open Space with funding support from MDEQ and NOAA. This site will be used to provide information used as a basis for analysis, identify next steps and gather feedback on issues related to recreation and open space.

Community Information

The initial efforts are being undertaken to better understand the current state of recreation, trails & open space in the area. Public input will occur throughout the process as necessary to confirm or clarify information gathered from multiple sources. A major gap in the current system is the lack of a centralized coordinating entity. HARBOR, Inc. has compiled information on Recreation Organizations, Activities and Contacts, Facilities and Needs, Expectations and Desires as a first step in filling that gap.

Planning for the Future

Prior to now, planning for recreation and open space was done by the seven separate jurisdictions in the HARBOR Area. Additionally, until a change in state law, the Harbor Springs School District (which serves the same general boundaries as HARBOR, Inc.) had financial resources to assist with delivering public recreation programs and facilities. A gap in services has resulted from the change in state school funding and the complexity of providing facilities and programs for the larger area. This initiative is working to fill that gap.
