Overarching Goals in Planning for Trails Safety Alternate mode of transportation Parking in Town is a problem Data on where people want to walk Common Trails in Use NCT - Hiking Make unofficial paths official Trail up Hoyt from State Listing all trail types Hiking Biking Equestrian Cross Country Water Trail Economics and Space warrant multi-use trails Snowmobiles avoid conflict Bike and Equestrian are not good mixes Safe Trail networks within City area are a priority - a good network Older kids could help younger kids with use of trails Consider roller Health and Exercise - Promote better health Link outlying areas - State cannot be used even by experienced riders Emmet Heights - cars going too fast Get trails away from shoulder - 20 ft. separation Developers should tie into main lines - any new development Connect resort area (like Boyne) to town Parking at trail heads Car Pool parking lots Destination to an open space (a place to go outside of town) Provide amenities (gazebos, etc.) Money!! Maintenance is huge Biggest problem is finding the facilities (NCT in particular) Coordination with various hiking organizations Public awareness People making living from tourism and recreation Must be represented at state particularly for forest maintenance What would happen is you went up north and it wasn’t there Coordination of all environmental organizations Awareness of blight and its impact on Recreation and tourism - townships must enforce blight ordinances on private property
Specific Deficiencies or Needs – Trails & Open Space Legislation for wider min. ROW for trails space Good CC skiing - a lot available Some CC skiing close to town would be good Hughston / Stutsmanville to Crows Nest - organized cc ski event each year - not groomed year round Map for public access Sign for public access Enforcement - allowing access Money - not enough enforcement Neighbors don’t want signage Get people from soccer field on Hoyt into town/school Linkage from athletic fields Kayaks need safe travel Zoll to harbor point Zoll along shore Ford park Sky is the limit - petoskey to mackinac Keewenau water trail is a good Model Some things could be remedied by appropriate zoning How many townships will need private property owners to donate land Look at something used unofficially to see if it can be official Talk to owners directly Open Space north of Kiwanis Park is largest close to city Develop a loop here from town - get private participation Soccer use that for running Mooradian Connector trails - need to take you someplace Need to connect with Quick Deficiency of Open Space Quick/Hoyt is example Shephard property is very important Horse Farm - Byron / Chocolant Priceless-last piece of meadowland Kelbel pharmacy School Forest - need to connect Get status of school property What process or approach for open space preservation? Views? Agricultural/prime farmland? Bring Leelanau group in/ Conservation Resource Alliance Menonequa will not allow access Audubon bird count only pair Harriers Sand Hill Cranes What is the outlook for the future? ATV - Concerns Cross Village turned down - still a need for launching Recent land use update? Influence/participate Emmet county plan Form CIG What can we do to make H.S. more walkable Trail linking to park areas/park and ride Look at green zones/ circles of building or look like traverse
