Land Preservation and Acquisition Task Force Charter
This task force will be looking at the various land use management tools that township residents and township government may have available to them.
During the township’s Master Planning process, it became clear that a central part of the vision for the future of the township depends upon retaining its rural character and its view sheds, and protecting its environmental resources and farms and forests. The Friendship Township Master Plan states that land use planning and regulation within public and private lands should secure open spaces by utilizing planning tools and techniques, including but not limited to the following:
Work with conservancies to protect and identified conservation and recreations lands. Utilize the purchase of development rights, transfer of development rights, and provide density bonuses for development that voluntarily preserves natural and/or cultural resources. Use and promote conservation design techniques that allow development to occur while protecting and linking resources. As supported by the surveying of Township residents, to purchase land and unique parcels to protect sensitive natural resources and cultural resources. Explore the creation of a Friendship Township land preservation and acquisition task force to guide township decision-making. Explore the use of innovative financing tools to facilitate open space acquisition and preservation, which may include, but are not limited to federal, state, and local grants; private and community foundations; and/or a local millage as supported by resident opinion surveys.
