Pharmaceutical And Over the counter Drug Disposal Program (POD)
The POD Program is a highly successful collaboration including a stakeholder’s group, community collections, and a permanent drug drop box program.
The POD Stakeholder’s Group consists of numerous entities united in their concern about public health and safety, and environmental effects of holding onto, flushing, and land filling unwanted drugs. Local entities include including HARBOR, Inc., the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Emmet County Department of Public Works, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, McClaren-Northern Michigan, Antrim County, The Michigan State Police, Emmet County Sheriff, City of Petoskey, City of Harbor Springs, local pharmacies and pharmacists, and others. Members of this group are also in contact with and coordinate additional activities in Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties. This collaboration is responsible for numerous community collection events and permanent drug collection box sites with over 1 ton of both controlled and non-controlled substances collected since 2008.
A listing of permanent drug collection box sites may be accessed at http://www.watershedcouncil.org/learn/pharmacueticals-in-our-waters/ .
