Founded in 1990, the Historical Society's mission is to protect, perserve and present artifacts of historical interest to the Harbor Springs area. HSAHS maintains a small summer reading room at the Josephine Ford Park municipal park on Bay Street open July - September.
HSAHS organizes a number of historical related activities throughout the year including walking tours, local history talks, historic home tour, Victorian Tea, bi-annual tour of the Little Traverse Lighthouse and Shay Days held the third weekend each July to celebrate the life and inventions of local inventor Ephraim Shay.
A four year effort to open a permanent Harbor Springs Area History Museum is coming closer to reality with plans underway for the renovation of the original Harbor Springs City Hall, once the Emmet County Seat. A history museum with a special focus on interactive exhibits for area children and residents is planned with attention to restoring authentic architectural details to the exterior. The interior will be remodeled to create a museum which can proudly take its place in a Main Street historic district along with the Blackbird Museum and Shay Park. To add your enthusiasm, energy and ideas to this local project please call an HSAHS Board Member and join us in creating a very special place where area history will come alive!
